Bratislava had a problem — there was no big cultural event organized by the city from January till April and it felt a little bit sad and “grey” during that time. But worry no more — since 2022, the city started to throw a big party indeed! A Carnival parade!
A Carnival parade is celebrated in Slovakia mostly in small villages and towns but we decided to adapt it on more urban environment. My task was to create a visual identity that would make gray and gloomy streets of our city more vibrant and colorful. I drew a series of geometric figures, inspired by traditional costumes that people would wear in rural areas — but more importantly — I also included costumes resembling objects of everyday life in the big city, making it feel more current and modern. Vladimír Kompánek, Slovak modern painter and sculptor who liked depicting Carnival parades, was also a great source of inspiration for the characters.
